Aussie wine impact on USA

The Australian wine industry is one of the most exciting, innovative and diverse wine enterprises in the world. With over 65 distinct wine regions accounting for more than 3000 wineries, Australia is abuzz with the fragrance of fruity grapes in the air.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, wine lovers in the US only wanted two things from the Australian wine market – delicious budget wines and luxury Shirazes. Although premium varietals and blends were still being produced in Australia at the time by boutique wineries, they were mostly unheard of in the US, and thus, hard to find in American markets. The iconic Penfolds Grange is what made Australian wine famous in the US, and for a long time, it stayed that way.

The wheel of fortune turned in 2008 when the financial crisis hit the USA, and people realized that they had had enough of bold and fruity reds. The Australian dollar surged to a 25-year high as compared to the US dollar, and drought, as well as bushfires, destroyed many vineyards and wineries in Victoria. All these reasons led to a decline in Australian fine wine sales to the US, a significant blow to both the Aussie wine industry and the American wine market.

It is now, about eight years, later that Aussie wine has started creeping back onto American wine shelves and restaurant lists. Young and passionate Australian winemakers are experimenting and crafting delicious and hearty wines which are hard to resist.

An export report by Wine Australia in June 2017 revealed that sales of Aussie wines costing $25 and above have seen a hike of 17% in the US market. This has indeed caused for celebration for Australia winemakers and winery owners since the US is a market ripe for the taking!
