Broke Fordwich: Land of Food and Wine Festivals

Far removed from the urban hustle and bustle, lies this tranquil and small yet renowned subregion of Hunter Valley – Broke Fordwich. Things to do

  • Enjoy fine dining and wine-ing experience at the chef’s hatted restaurants and cellar doors of Broke Fordwich. It is also home to fine boutique wineries and olive producers. The Hunter Valley’s largest organic vineyard is located here.
  • Nestled by the surrounding hills, the region flaunts enchanting views to the visitors.
  • Witness the countless events that take place here all around the year. If visiting Broke Fordwich in the month of April, be sure to plan your trip around the festival ‘Little Bit of Italy’ – from food to wine, it showcases all Italian things.
  • Another famous event Brook Village Fair and Vintage Car Display takes place in the month of September every year. Even if you’ve missed upon the two, you can still enjoy the monthly community market that falls on every first Sunday of the month. The region has something for every visitor!
  • The region also offers free camping at the McNamara Park – adjacent to Wollombi River, the camping site is surrounded by bushes and large grass.

The Climate

Broke Fordwich experiences a continental climate. The variation in diurnal temperature is high. Owing to the distance from the Pacific ocean, the rainfall is lower as compared to other parts of Hunter Valley.

The Soil

The vineyards are covered with rich red volcanic soil (A result of volcanic eruptions in the past). It shares similarity with the famous terra rossa soil of Coonawarra region.

Must-try Wines

It is known to harvest the finest Semillon, a variety that Hunter Valley is known for. Broke Fordwich is widely-planted with Shiraz and Chardonnay along with some lesser-known European grape varieties like Barbera wines and Verdelho.
