The humble beginnings of Cumulus Wines started in the early 1980s when a group of passionate and skilful winemakers discovered a viticulture paradise in Orange Region, New South Wales. The exceptional quality of soil and favourable cool and breezy climate proved to be the key elements to the successful emergence of the wine industry in this region. Considered as one of the largest wineries in Australia, Cumulus Wines started with a 508 hectare vineyard and a world class 10 kilo-tonne winemaking facility that can store up to 8 million litres of wine. This tremendous investment is a manifestation of the founder’s high hopes for the future of the winery. Surely, they did not make any mistake and every penny invested is worth the returns. The company was renamed to “Cumulus Wines” in 2004 after the prevailing cloud formations in the locality.

The partnership forged with the Berardo family of winemakers hailing from Portugal is considered as a critical turning point with the incorporation of extensive knowledge and expertise of traditional European winemaking to the innovative approach of Australian culture. The vineyard, situated across the overlapping regions of Orange and Central Ranges is regarded as one of the most important production areas of grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet, Mourvedre, Chardonnay, Semillon and Grenache. The combination of sustainable agricultural techniques, a natural climate of cold winters and mild summers, and ample spring rains contribute to the growth of healthy and low-yield vines.

Climbing Merlot

Climbing wines, as its name suggests are made from grapes harvested in cool and elevated portions (about 600 m above sea level) in the Orange region. This range of wines features subtle layers of vibrant and flavourful fruit characters that add to the complexity of the wine.

Selected Merlot grapes are de-stemmed and carefully fermented in warm conditions with the skins on to create the popular Climbing Merlot. The wine was matured for 12 months inside French oak barrels until it achieved a full to medium-bodied palate and rich red colour with tinges of purple.

The bouquet of Climbing Merlot is characterized by fruits of dark berries, sweet plums with an earthy and herbaceous note of leaves. Its palate is dominated by ripe plums and berries with supple tannins and highlights of spices. The vibrant and controlled levels of acid lead to a structured and lingering finish.

Though the wine can be enjoyed right from the winery, Climbing Merlot is still best consumed five years after the release of the vintage. This is to bring out a deeper and more matured combination of flavours. This wine pairs well with hearty dishes such as roasted meats, red meat poultry, tomato-based pastas and other courses inspired by Italian and Mediterranean cooking.

Today, the international appeal of Cumulus Wines is on its rise. Being loved by many wine drinkers locally and worldwide, Cumulus Wines is now distributing more than 40 percent of their production out to international markets including USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Europe.
