The grouping of First Families of Wines in Australia was made in 2009 as a representative of the Australian wines to the world at large. The wineries which currently are members of this grouping are selected on the basis of certain criteria. These criteria are:

  1. Have a "landmark wine". This wine shall be listed under Langton's Classification. Three-fourth members of the grouping shall also agree that the wine is "iconic".
  2. Under the Australian Corporations Act, it shall be a family-owned business.
  3. A minimum of 20-year vertical tasting is also required.
  4. Business has been in existence for at least two generations of wine-makers.
  5. Shall own vineyards more than 50 years old and/or own distinguished sites characterising the best of terroir.
  6. The Winery makes a long-term commitment for environmental best practices, export and suitable cellar door experience.
  7. A member of winery shall be serving on wine industry bodies
  8. Winery shall have the Membership of the Winemakers Federation of Australia

At present, there are 12 members under this grouping which together represent 17 wine growing regions of Australia. These members are the chief movers and shakers of wine industry in Australia. With a range of Australian wine brands in their portfolio, these account for a large proportion of wine production and export from Australia.
