  • The two common phrases used when drinking wine – drinking to one’s health and toasting come from Greece and Rome.
  • In ancient Greece, when wine was served, the host was supposed to take a sip first assuring the guests that the wine wasn’t poisoned. This ritual gave rise to the phrase- drinking to one’s health. The Romans continued with this Greek tradition but added a piece of toasted bread to every glass of wine before drinking it. This was done to mellow down any undesirable tastes or acidity in the wine and thus the phrase ‘toasting’ came into being.
  • Long ago, in Rome, women were not allowed to drink wine. The rule was so strict that if any man found his wife drinking, he was allowed to kill her that very minute.
  • Wine was used in ancient Greece and Rome as a means of trade. You’ll be amused to know that the Greeks exchanged wine in return for rich metals while the Romans bartered wine for slaves.
  • As it ages, even the best red wine loses its colour. You will often find lovely vibrant reds or purples turn into shades of brick red. White wines on the other hand catch up with colour as they age. From pale straw colour, you can see them turn to lovely golden and even yellowish as they mature.
  • Have you ever heard the words- dumb wine or numb wine? A dumb wine is one that does not have any fragrance at present. This wine however can develop some interesting aromas in the future. A numb wine is one that neither has any fragrance at present nor has the potential to develop any in the future.
  • Wine tasting is a fine art and essentially involves smelling the wine. According to studies, women usually are better wine testers than men as they have a better sense of smell.
