The Orange wine region might be relatively new to the Australian winemaking scene (in comparison to other reputed Aussie wine regions), but in the last 30 years, the region has really proven its mettle!

A cool climate region located in central NSW, Orange lies at an elevation of about 600 metres. It is situated 260km to the west of Sydney, a three-and-a-half hour drive, and receives adequate rainfall. Originally called the Central Highlands, Orange has always been a renowned orchard region producing pears, apples and cherries.

An experimental vine plantation was carried out in the 1940s near Molong, but Orange witnessed its first commercial plantation at Bloodwood Estate in 1980. The boundary of Orange is entirely defined by its topography as well as altitude – with the 600-metre contour line. The cool climate and high altitude slopes are owed to Mount Canobolas. Lush soils cover the entirety of the region, made rich and lush with volcanic basalt. What more could a grape grower ask for?
