The making of Cabernet Sauvignon wines was the result of a chance crossing between Cabernet Franc with Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties. This happened in 17th century. At present, this red grape variety is one of the most widely grown grape varieties of the world.

Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyards Area in Australia

Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in approximately 24680 hectares of wine grapes growing area in Australia.

Cabernet Sauvignon- Vineyards Area

This is about 18 percent of the total grape variety land area. The area under this grape variety remained almost unchanged since 2001 till the last few years. Thereafter, there has been some decline in the total area under cultivation.

In 2015, the total tonnage of Cabernet Sauvignon wines crushed were about 12 percent of the total wine grape quantity crushed.

Cabernet Sauvignon Growing Regions in Australia

Riverland region accounts for almost one-third of total land area under cultivation for this wine grape varietal. Murray-Darling river region of Victoria, Riverina, Coonawarra and Murray-Darling river region of New South Wales are other important regions in that order where this grape is grown.

Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Exports From Australia

In terms of volume of wines exported, 102 million litres of Cabernet Sauvignon wines accounting for 14 percent of total wine exports was recorded. Out of these, the bottled wines exported were about 58 million tonnes which form about 18 percent of total bottled wine exports.

Cabernet Sauvignon- exportUSA accounted for 31 percent, China 28 percent, UK 8 percent, Canada 7 percent and Hong Kong 5 percent of total Cabernet Sauvignon wine exports from Australia.

Most of these wines (67 percent) exported from Australia are in per bottle price range of AUD 2.49/L to AUD 4.99/L. Next important price range of wines is AUD 5/L to AUD 7.5/L, which accounts of 13 percent of bottled Cabernet Sauvignon wine exports.
