Grenache grape variety is originally from Spain. It is also grown in Australia and was one of the major red wine variety for making wines till the 1950s. The following statistics sum up the growth, production and exports of this wine variety to/from Australia.

The total cultivable area under Grenache has declined since the 1950s and it stood at 1510 hectares in 2015.

The decline in land area is because the wineries give preference to other varieties such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. This makes roughly 1 percent of the land area under grapes cultivation for making wines.

Grenache Growing Regions and Production

The winegrape tonnage crushed in 2015 stood at 13000 tonnes, which was less than 1 percent of the total winegrapes crushed in that year. The top grape producing regions of Australia where this variety is chiefly grown are Riverland, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Clare Valley.

Grenache Wines Exports

Statistics of Grenache wine exports show some very interesting aspects. Grenache Wine Exports from AustraliaAt first, total volume of exports is 4.33 million litres and out this the total volume of bottled wine export is 1.7 million litres. Secondly, the top 5 destinations where Grenache wines are sold are People’s Republic of China, United Kingdom, Canada, USA and New Zealand. China and UK account for about 21 percent of total share of this wine export.

In terms of per bottle price, it is interesting to note that most of the Grenache wines sold are in AUD 10/L to AUD 19.99/L. The next higher sales are achieved by Grenache wines sold in the price range of AUD 2.5/L to AUD 4.99/L. This shows that it is the premium Grenache wines which are mostly in demand in foreign countries.
