I like to spend most of my weekends at home curled up on my couch, watching old movies or reading books. I feel it’s a great way to relax my body and mind. This great way could have been termed perfect as well but it falls short of perfection because of one thing. Every now and then, I feel like opening my favourite bottle of wine, McGuigan Black Label Cabernet Merlot or McGuigan Black Label Red Blend to enjoy with my movies. However, living alone and not being a big drinker, I am not able to do so as wine goes stale very fast. If you’ve also experienced the dilemma of should I open the wine or not to drink alone, let us understand why it happens and which wines will have a better shelf life than others.

When a bottle of wine is left opened, oxygen wreaks havoc on it and ruins its taste and aromas. In fact, in contact with oxygen, wine can turn to vinegar within a couple of days. Sparkling wines go stale the fastest after opening. It can become flat and undrinkable in no time. So, if you open your bubbly make sure you finish it the same day. Next comes white wine! These should be consumed within 1-2 days of opening if refrigerated. If you are drinking a heavy white, then you can stretch till 3 days. Like whites, Rose’ also begins tasting off within 2 days of opening.

Red wines have a little more potential than whites. While lighter reds last for about 1-3 days, full bodied reds can sustain themselves for more than 2-5 days if refrigerated.

Only dessert wines are the ones that can remain fresh for about 7-14 days of opening due to the high alcohol and high sugar content which act as preservatives and prevent the wine from oxidation.
