History of Langhorne Creek

Winemaking has long been a part of the region’s heritage. Established and named after Alfred Langhorne in 1841, soon it was introduced with winemaking by Frank Potts. In the year 1860, Frank planted the fertile soils of Langhorne Creek wine region with Shiraz and Verdelho grapes. Following the rich heritage of over 160 years, the region houses some of the highly-rated wineries, producing world-class wines.

The Climate & Soil

Lying on a flood plain that is created by the Bremer and Angas river, the rich soils of Langhorne Creek wine region are well-drained by water from the Mt Lofty Ranges. The region enjoys a cool maritime climate (Cooler than regions like the Barossa and McLaren Vale). It is covered by deep, alluvial sandy loam soils, however, the colour may vary from dark grey to reddish-brown.

Must-Try Wines

Having a reputation for both red and white wines, the region is especially known for its aromatic and fruit-driven, medium to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The world’s oldest Cab Sav vines grow in the Langhorne Creek wine region. Apart from this varietal, it has also gained a reputation for the production of full-bodied Shiraz and Malbec blends since the 1960s. It is also emerging as a quality white wine producer, widely harvesting Verdelho and Chardonnay grape varieties.
