Each has a specific terroir, largely influenced by climate, and offers a variety of soil types from open gravels to heavier clays. They are all low in fertility and include light sands, clays, loams and gravels. Mt Difficulty Estate Pinot Noir is blended from a range of Bannockburn vineyards, with the majority of grapes coming from earlier plantings which are predominantly clones 5, 6 and 10/5. The wine displays lovely elegance and flows with striking precision and clarity. On the palate it kicks off with a supple dark berry entry, moving into a beautifully textured plush mid-palate, after which fine elegant textural tannins frame fruit and acidity on a lengthy finish. Mt Difficulty Single Vineyard wines are even more site-specific, created to express the terroir from which they come, and thus Mt Difficulty Long Gully Pinot Noir is the essence of the vineyard itself. Long Gully has Lochar soils with thin and wavy clay pans which are deep enough to cause no impediment to roots or drainage. These are well-drained, high pH soils ideally suited to viticulture. They generally have a 30 cm depth of topsoil over fine to moderately coarse gravels. The majority of the fruit in the Long Gully Pinot Noir is from vines that are 18-21 years old with a smattering from vines that are 15 years old.

Tasting Notes

Long Gully Pinot Noir is handcrafted in very limited quantities and only released in outstanding vintages. In the glass, the wine opens with red cherry, cranberry, raspberry, dried herbs and subtle earth or spice. The aromatic profile is inviting rather than overpowering, with fresh fruit at the centre and subtle secondary notes adding dimension. As it settles, finer floral, herbal, mineral or spice nuances emerge, giving the nose pleasing detail. On the palate, the wine follows through with bright red berries, cherry and delicate savoury complexity. The fruit has good definition, while the regional character keeps the profile focused and food-friendly. The mid-palate is silky and medium-bodied, supported by fine tannins, allowing the flavours to build without becoming heavy. Vibrant cool-climate acidity provides shape and keeps the wine balanced, drawing the palate towards a refreshing close. The combination of fruit, structure and freshness makes the wine approachable while still offering enough detail to reward slower tasting. The finish is long, savoury and gently spicy. Rather than fading quickly, the flavours linger with fruit, savoury detail and gentle spice or mineral character. With a little time in the glass, the aromatic layers become more expressive and the palate feels increasingly integrated. Serving temperature is important: keeping lighter styles appropriately chilled preserves freshness, while richer or structured wines can benefit from a short period in the glass to reveal additional complexity. At the table, this is a versatile wine with a natural affinity for duck, pork, mushroom dishes, salmon, roast vegetables and soft cheeses. Its balance allows it to work as an aperitif or alongside a meal, depending on the style. It is particularly enjoyable with dishes that echo its freshness and fruit character rather than overpowering it. Overall, Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Central Otago Pinot Noir 2024 is best appreciated for its balance, varietal clarity and regional personality. The 2024 vintage, where applicable, contributes to the wine's current expression and makes it suitable for relaxed drinking as well as a more considered tasting.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/5805/8164/files/buy-Mt-Difficulty-Roaring-Meg-Central-Otago-Pinot-Noir-2024-6-Bottles-Just-Wines-33234544033972.jpg?v=1787717533
