Winery Overview
Grant Burge is one of the well-established names in Australian winemaking, with a reputation built on Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking heritage. While rooted in Barossa, the League of Three Shiraz brings together fruit from three distinct regions – Barossa, Wrattonbully, and the Limestone Coast. Each contributes something unique: Barossa’s bold fruit, Wrattonbully’s structure, and the Limestone Coast’s cool-climate elegance. It’s a blend that reflects both thoughtful winemaking and the diversity of South Australia’s wine country.
Vintage Conditions
The growing season leading into this vintage offered ideal conditions across all three regions. Warm, dry days in the Barossa delivered ripe, concentrated fruit, while the cooler evenings in Wrattonbully and the Limestone Coast helped maintain freshness and structure. This balance between warmth and coolness allowed the grapes to ripen fully while retaining bright acidity, setting the foundation for a generous yet refined shiraz.
Winemaking Process
Fruit from each region was harvested separately to preserve the integrity of each site. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in stainless steel to maintain freshness, with selected parcels matured in a combination of new and seasoned oak to add complexity without overpowering the fruit. The final blend was assembled with an eye for harmony, bringing together richness, spice, and length in equal measure.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, the wine opens with aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, laced with notes of liquorice, black pepper and soft vanilla from the oak. On the palate, it’s plush and smooth, with generous dark fruit flavours carried by fine tannins. The mid-palate has a touch of spice and savoury depth, leading into a long, balanced finish. It’s full of flavour, but never heavy, with just enough lift to keep it bright and drinkable.
Food Pairings
This shiraz is a natural match for hearty fare – think grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef, or a classic cottage pie. The dark fruit and gentle spice also work well with rich vegetarian dishes like mushroom and lentil stew or aubergine parmigiana. Its balance of fruit and structure makes it a flexible choice at the table, whether it’s a casual roast dinner or something more robust and slow-cooked.
