A part of the Big Rivers zone, this region is the largest producer of wines in New South Wales. Riverina wine region yields 15% of the total grape production in Australia. Centred on the city of Griffith, it's a flat tract of land on state's south-west plains.
Big Rivers region experiences a hot growing season with ample sunshine, low seasonal rainfall, and low relative humidity. These climatic conditions are perfect for growing several of the grape varieties like Semillon and Chardonnay, the region’s highlights. Later in the season, after harvesting most of the red and white varieties, the higher humidity conditions favour onset and spread of Botrytis Cinerea. Such climate is beneficial fungus for producing fine, concentrated, and sweet botrytised wines.
Riverina has red-brown soil with a lomy surface and also shows lime in some areas at a depth of 70mm.
