Formerly known as the Mid-Murray region, Swan Hill is nestled on the banks of the Murray River. It comprises parts of two Australian states - Victoria and New South Wales. The north-eastern part of the region lies in the Big Rivers zone, while the south-western part falls within the North West Victoria zone. Swan Hill is a fertile agricultural region that’s irrigated by the Murray River and its tributaries. The first vines for the modern vineyards here were planted by Thomson family in 1930 for the region's first winery St Andrews. The winery is still operational.
Though the region is mostly hot throughout the year, Swan Hill receives more rainfall than Murray Darling wine region, another prominent region in the zone. The region has red-brown loamy sands, with pH ranging from neutral to alkaline. This helps in producing fruit driven wines suitable for short to medium-term cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Shiraz are some of the most popular varieties grown in the Swan Hill region.
