A wine region in South Australia, the Southern Flinders Ranges was only established in 2003 when it was registered under the Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980. That said, grapevines have existed in the region since the 1890s. While this area grows a number of grape varieties, it has gained a reputation in the recent years producing certain red wine varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot.
The Southern Flinders Ranges is located to the east of Spencer Gulf. Geologically, it is somewhat similar to Clare Valley. In terms of climate, the region is dry and warm, rather than hot, despite its northern location. This is due to influences of the Spencer Gulf and the elevation of the region.
