This wine region covers all of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, the country’s third largest island. It was registered in 2000 as an AGI (Australian Geographical Indication) under Wine Australia Corporation Act 1980. It is one of the five wine regions in the Fleurieu zone.
As of the year 2014, the most common planting is Shiraz at 35.7%, with Cabernet Sauvignon ranking second at 30.7%. These are followed by 7.1% of Chardonnay plantings. The climate of the region is temperate and free from extreme temperatures. Relative humidity is high, which means that grapevines are susceptible to Botrytis, the fungus that aids the production of sweet wine.
