Known for its full-flavoured and generous wines, Riverland wine region follows the twists and turns of the Murray River, from where it downstreams into South Australia to Blanchetown. Observing a continental climate, Riverland wine region has long sunny days and cooler nights. Long sunshine hours and low relative humidity, favouring little or no disease pressures, ensure the fruit ripening to the fullest. The climate is suitable for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and alternative grape varieties like Montepulciano, Vermentino and Nero d’Avola.
The two main types of soils in Riverland wine region are river valley soils and Mallee soils. River valley soil is a composition of sandy loams and clay subsoils, whereas higher ground Mallee soils consist of wind-blown sands over lime and layers of clay.
