This Australian wine region, popular for its award-winning and premium quality wines, is a part of the South Coast zone. Shoalhaven Coast has vineyards extending from Hinterland to the Coastal Plains in New South Wales. The region's first vineyard was planted by Alexander Berry on the slopes of Mt. Coolangatta in his Coolangatta Estate.
Shoalhaven Coast's climate is highly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. Apart from experiencing warm temperatures during the growing season which is perfect for viticulture, the region also receives unpredictable rainfall. Sometimes this rainfall may appear quite pleasing, sometimes it might not. Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are some of the grape varieties that have excellently adapted to the region's ocean-driven climate. Some other varieties that show great results include Arneis, Verdelho, Viognier, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Tannat.
Every June, the Shoalhaven city hosts a long weekend Winter Wine Festival to celebrate the region's many wines.
