Surrounded by tree-covered hillsides, Denmark is set along the Denmark River and the Wilson Inlet. It is a coastal neighbour to Albany and one of the five subregions of the Great Southern wine region. The first winery of Denmark, Tinglewood, was opened in 1976. However, the region could receive its official Geographical Indication only by January 2003. This region is marginally wetter and cooler than other Great Southern regions. The vineyards of Denmark experience a strongly maritime climate, greater rainfalls and high relative humidity influenced by the sea. The varieties grown and the wine styles produced in Denmark are similar to Albany just like its climate. This Western Australian region is majorly known for its cool climate Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz wines. Grapes for these wines are grown in more than 25 Denmark vineyards.
