Porongurup is an inland, continental subregion of the Great Southern wine region, with Mount Barker located on its western boundary. The region derives its name from one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, the Porongurup Range. Porongurup's climate is mostly Mediterranean with cool to mild winters, and sunny and warm summers. Spread across the region is the granite rock-bed which was formed by the massive tectonic forces. The weathered granite resulted in deep karri loam soil that's perfect for growing high-quality wine grape varieties. The most popular white wine varieties of this region are Riesling, Traminer, and Chardonnay. Porongurup's red wine varieties such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier have also gained recognition worldwide.
