Great Western is a subregion of Victoria’s Grampians region. The climate is best described as Mediterranean. With the Southern Ocean being 150 km or so away, the region receives a cooling maritime influence. It is regarded as a cooler climate grape-growing region. Long autumns mean excellent ripening of fruit, without any reduction in the acidity. The soil varies from crumbly clay loams to hard setting silt. This subregion is popular for its powerful and elegant red wines. Shiraz from the Great Western is internationally recognised for its exceptional quality. Other cool climate varieties that are worth mentioning include Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
