George Fistonich leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started with an acre of vines. In 1962, he made the first wine under the brand name Villa Maria with grapes harvested from this block. He made dry red and white wines with grapes from the greater Auckland regions. The company expanded rapidly in the 1970s. As for today, Villa Maria exports wine to around 60 countries worldwide and is the most awarded winery in New Zealand.
