The Beautiful Barossa Valley

Barossa Valley is one of the most iconic wine regions of Australia. Renowned the world over for its beauty & rich terroir, Barossa Valley is also one of the oldest wine regions in Australia. This is the most beautiful wine region in South Australia, situated about 35 miles northeast of the beautiful city of Adelaide.

An interesting fact to know about the Barossa Valley region is that although British culture has significantly influenced most of the Aussie wine industry, Barossa’s wine industry was established by German settlers who were fleeing from Silesia. Barossa is a hot climate region, thus enabling the growth of extremely ripe and juicy grapes. In 1841, when the Silesian refugees came to Barossa, they mainly focused on growing Riesling grapes – a German origin variety. Plantings of Shiraz and Grenache quickly followed as port wines started becoming popular amongst Aussie wine drinkers. This is also true that by the end of the 20th century, many boutique wineries emerged in the region, which specialized in the production of bold and full-bodied old vine Shiraz – a massive hit with the Australian masses!

Although Barossa Valley is prominently hailed as a Shiraz-specific region, various juicy varieties such as Chardonnay, Grenache, Semillon, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive here. This region has also given birth to some of the top-most wine brands the country has ever known – Penfolds, Peter Lehmann, Wolf Blass, Yalumba, & much more.

Grapes produced in the Barossa Valley region usually contain high levels of sugar and low levels of acids. Processes like acidification, adding water to the grape juice, and reverse osmosis are carried out to balance the wines being crafted. Fermentation in oak barrels helps provide a smooth mouthfeel to the wine, thus creating a full flavoured wine with vibrant flavours and aromas.

Even planning a one-day visit to this excellent wine region could be quite fun! Various wineries offer fantastic food and wine tasting sessions, where one can sit, enjoy the view, basking in the Sun, and sip on their favourite wines. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and head to Barossa Valley for a memorable wine experience!
