Initially, it was decided by the authorities to join both the Peel and Geographe regions together. Considering the amorphicity of such classification, the idea was abandoned and Geographe was registered as a separate wine region.

Though the region does not consist of any subregions, it is broadly divided into four wine growing area—Harvey (lying close to the northern boundary), the Ferguson Valley (Dominated by Sauv Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz and Cab Sav plantings), Donnybrook (The area experiences great diurnal fluctuations) and Busselton (A true coastal town).

Established in 1999 as a wine region, it has earned a reputation for being the most-exciting region in Australia, despite the small size in terms of size and quantity of grapes produced.

The region also hosts an annual event, the ’Geographe Wine Show’, showcasing locally produced wines—bliss for all foodies! The wine show first took place in 2002 and has become a part of the tradition, being conducted for over 15 years now.

The warm climate of the Geographe wine region is moderated by cool sea breezes from the Indian Ocean. It witnesses rainfall during winters, summers being predominantly dry. |
The region is covered with a variety of soil-types: tuart sands in the coastal region along with limestone; traditional & rich soil at Donnybrook either consisting of gneissic rock or gravelly sandy loam. |

The region is known for producing intense and flavourful wines. Drawing upon the Geographe wine show results, Shiraz, SSB and Chardonnay are amongst the best wines crafted here. The new generation winemakers are however experimenting with alternative varieties as well like Tempranillo, Sangiovese and some others rarely grown in Australia.
