Ever imagined storing wine underwater? Here’s how!!

After organic wines and then low calorie wines took the wine world by storm, wine lovers must be wondering about ‘what’s next’! Isn’t it?? Do not worry! The next revolution is right around the corner.

We have often paired our wines with seafood and enjoyed the combination. But, have you ever imagined storing your wine right besides these water animals?

storing wine underwater

It is possible now! Underwater wine cellars are ready to bring another revolution in the wine world. Wine experts are seeing them as a much better alternative to storing wines!

Since year 2007, many wine producing countries including France, Italy, USA and Australia have been experimenting with storing wine underwater and have come across a number of benefits:

  1. The space available under our ocean/sea beds or fresh water sources is unlimited and free of cost. It cuts down the cost that one needs to incur on land to build cellars to store wine.
  2. More importantly, constant absence of light and cool temperatures under the water provides optimum conditions for the storing of wines.
  3. For the producers of sparkling wines, cellaring their wine under water has another added advantage. Since the pressure is high under water, the bubbles remain more active in the wine. This keeps your sparkling wines more bubbly than they would be if stored on land. Also, the soft rocking motion of the waves helps mix lees well in the wine giving it more complexity and carbonization.
  4. Also, when aged under water, wines have shown more complexity and more mature tannins than when stored on land.

Although not a new phenomenon, wine cellaring under water is gaining momentum fast in the wine world due to these above mentioned benefits. All we need to do is wait and watch to see what turn this takes and when can we commonly come across wines stored underwater in our nearby stores or online wine shops.
