One of SA’s Oldest Wine Regions: Adelaide Hills

Adelaide Hills, adorned by leafy lanes, bright villages, cultural discoveries and wildlife encounters, is one of the largest wine regions of South Australia. Located to the east of Adelaide city in the south Mount Lofty Ranges, the Adelaide Hills wine region always make to the bucket list of every tourist and wine lover.

History of Adelaide Hills

One of the oldest wine regions of South Australia, its history dates back to 1836 when the first vineyard was planted in North Adelaide with European vine cuttings. Later, the unique red wine styles- méthode champenoise and sparkling burgundy, were introduced into the winemaking scene by a French winemaker.

The region saw various ups and downs, and presently it houses a number of small artisan wineries which carry forward the rich heritage of European style wines.

The Terroir

Situated on an elevation of more than 300m, the region is known for a cool climate which is ideal for growing vines. With two sub-regions - Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley, the terroir may vary but overall it comprises of a combination of clay loam, sandy loam and loam soil which may show shale and ironstone elements as well.

Characterised by distinct topography, climate and soil, the region is well-drained by fresh water from the winter rainfall.

Must-Try Varieties

The Adelaide Hills wine region is known for its unique style wines. It broke the stereotypes giving way to the ‘New Wave - Australian Chardonnay’ which show a fine texture and develop upon ageing. Chardonnay along with Pinot Noir is often used to produce sparkling wines. The elegant, refreshing Shiraz and the vibrant and dry Sauv Blanc are a must try. Some other varietals like Reisling, Semillon and Grüner Veltliner along with the former ones are wines that define this beautiful wine region.
