Unearthing the Beauty of Pyrenees Wine Region

Looking at those breathtaking views and magnificent hills of the Pyrenees in France is no more a dream. Just a few miles aways (less than 2 hrs of drive) from Melbourne, lies this beautiful Pyrenees wine region, that not just shares its name but a lot more in common with the Pyrenees in France. Located in the Western Victoria, this region is a delight for every wine lover. Enjoying a glass of award winning Pyrenees wine with a view of stunning ranges, the experience is as good as it sounds. The region’s French connection comes beautifully to life while visiting its cellar doors and vineyards.

History

Thomas Mitchell, a European surveyor and explorer, was the first one to travel through this region. He found the ranges reminiscent to the Pyrenees in Europe and hence, the wine region got its name. As the gold mines were explored in Avoca township, the Europeans came down to settle in Pyrenees. This gave rise to viticulture and farming.

The practice of winemaking here, dates back to 1960’s when Remy Martin (of French origin), established a brandy-making business - Chateau Remy. However, as the brandy markets in country collapsed he decided to produce sparkling wines. Later in 1970’s, wineries like Taltarni, Warrenmang and Mount Avoca were established in the Pyrenees wine region that became known for the finest red wines.

Terroir

The Pyrenees wine region experiences diverse mesoclimates because of varying altitudes. However, altogether the climate can be characterised as dry. During the day, it receives fair amount of sunshine, followed by cooler evening allowing the vines to enjoy a longer ripening period. As a result, the fruit develops complex characteristics while also retaining the acidity. The vineyards located at lower altitude are considered to be the best.

Must-Try Wines

Housing around 20 cellar doors and a number of boutique wineries, this small region is known for its outstanding red wines. It’s also emerging as a premium sparkling wine producer. Famous for spicy and savory Shiraz, the variety is often blended with Cab Sav to produce the classic Australian blend, Cabernet Shiraz.
