Gapsted Estate, located in north eastern Victoria, continues to champion alternative varieties well-suited to the cool climate of the King Valley. The Buffalo King Valley Fiano 2022 is a limited release that highlights the region’s ability to produce textural, expressive white wines with both freshness and depth. This wine reflects careful site selection, thoughtful winemaking, and a clear focus on varietal character.

Region and Vintage Conditions

The 2022 growing season in the King Valley was shaped by a third consecutive La Niña event, creating one of the most challenging seasons on record. Volatile weather during flowering significantly reduced yields across the region. Despite lower crops, fruit quality was exceptional, with strong natural acidity and flavour concentration. These conditions resulted in a wine of purity, balance, and ageing potential.

Winemaking Techniques

The Fiano was harvested in early March at 11.9 degrees baumé to preserve freshness and natural structure. After crushing and pressing, the juice was cold settled overnight and split into two fermentation parcels. One parcel underwent a cool fermentation in tank with light lees over 23 days to retain varietal purity. The second parcel was fermented on full solids in older French oak hogsheads to build texture and complexity, with a single new Hungarian tight grain hogshead adding subtle oak character. Both parcels were matured on lees with monthly stirring until bottling.

Appearance: Vibrant green hues with bright clarity.
Aroma: Lifted aromas of paw paw, starfruit, fresh tarragon, almond, and vanilla bean.
Palate: Full and textured, showing flavours of dragon fruit, honeydew, fresh herbs, blanched almonds, and buttered toast.
Finish: Long and layered, with savoury texture balanced by fresh acidity.
