Product Description
Winery Background
Established in 1868, Henschke is one of Australia’s most revered family-owned wineries, now under the custodianship of fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and viticulturist Prue Henschke. Their wines embody tradition and innovation, showcasing Barossa and Eden Valley’s most expressive sites. Henry’s Seven is named in tribute to Henry Evans, who planted the first vineyard at Keyneton in 1853, laying the foundation for the region’s winemaking legacy.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2023 vintage in the Barossa was marked by a cooler season with long ripening, yielding excellent fruit concentration and aromatic complexity. Grapes were sourced from Henschke’s sustainable vineyards across the Barossa Valley, with a focus on low-yielding, mature vines that impart depth, balance, and structure to the wine.
Winemaking Process
The blend comprises Shiraz (predominant) with Grenache, Mataro (Mourvèdre), and Viognier co-fermented to enhance fragrance and texture. Small-batch fermentation took place with gentle plunging to extract colour, flavour, and fine tannins. Following fermentation, the wine matured in seasoned French oak hogsheads for 10 months, preserving vibrancy while layering subtle spice and structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep crimson-purple in the glass. Aromas of lifted red and dark berries, violets, and a touch of exotic spice, supported by hints of anise, pepper, and subtle oak. The palate is plush and medium-bodied, bursting with juicy black cherry, raspberry, and plum fruits, interwoven with spice, floral lift, and fine-grained tannins. The finish is long, fresh, and silky, with lingering savoury complexity.
Food Pairing
A versatile wine that pairs beautifully with grilled lamb cutlets, slow-cooked beef cheeks, roasted duck, or Mediterranean vegetable dishes. Its vibrant fruit and spice also complement charcuterie boards and hard cheeses.
Story Behind the Wine
Henry’s Seven pays homage to Barossa’s pioneering spirit through Henry Evans, who first planted Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro vines at Keyneton. This modern Rhône-style blend celebrates that legacy while highlighting Henschke’s dedication to expressive, sustainable winemaking in the Barossa.
