Winery Background
Lost Farm Wines is a cool-climate winemaking project by the Angove Family, established in 2018. Located in the Tamar Valley, Tasmania, the winery partners with a select group of exceptional grape growers to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The cool climate of Tasmania is ideal for crafting outstanding Pinot Noir, and Lost Farm aims to showcase the potential of this environment.
Vineyard and Vintage Conditions
The 2022 Pinot Noir is sourced from two vineyards situated in the northern Tamar Valley, just south of Launceston. The majority of the fruit comes from the Glenbothy Vineyard, which features a northeast-facing slope of dark volcanic loam, capturing the warm morning sun. The second vineyard, located nearby, has dark Biscay clay soils that deliver brighter fruit characters. The cool climate allows for slow ripening, preserving the natural freshness and elegance of the grapes.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal flavour ripeness. A portion of the fruit underwent whole bunch fermentation, while the remainder was gently destemmed to retain whole berries. After a cold soak to gently extract flavours and tannins, fermentation occurred with regular punchdowns. The wine was gently pressed and matured in a combination of seasoned French oak barrels, including some new fine-grain low-toast barrels, for 10 months. Bottling occurred without fining or filtration.
