The McGuigan Family Release Range was created by Brian McGuigan, founder of McGuigan Wines, to honour the family's rich winemaking heritage. With four generations dedicated to the craft, McGuigan Wines is renowned for producing high-quality, approachable wines that reflect the best of Australia’s wine regions. This Shiraz Cabernet is a blend of two iconic varietals, combining depth and complexity with smooth drinkability.
Sourced from vineyards in South Eastern Australia’s Riverland region, the 2018 vintage enjoyed ideal conditions, leading to excellent fruit quality. The region’s hot climate, high evaporation rates, and low rainfall make irrigation essential. Long sunny days allowed the fruit to ripen fully, while cooler nights helped preserve freshness and balance. The low humidity resulted in minimal disease pressure, ensuring clean, concentrated fruit for winemaking.
The grapes were crushed and de-stemmed before fermentation on oak at controlled, cooler temperatures for 5 to 7 days. This process helped retain the vibrant fruit character while allowing soft oak nuances to integrate. The majority of the wine was then matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh, fruit-driven profile. Once fermentation was complete, careful blending and clarification took place, creating a smooth, well-rounded wine with excellent depth.
A deep ruby-red hue with purple and black tinges sets the stage for this expressive Shiraz Cabernet. The nose reveals enticing aromas of smoky oak layered with dark berry fruits, subtle hints of black pepper, and a touch of chocolate. On the palate, juicy blackberries and ripe plums are complemented by peppery spice and well-integrated oak. The finish is long and balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering acidity that adds freshness to the wine’s bold character.
This Shiraz Cabernet pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes. It is a perfect match for grilled or roasted red meats such as beef steaks, lamb shanks, or slow-cooked ribs. It also complements hearty pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, as well as aged cheeses like vintage cheddar or gouda. For a vegetarian option, try it with a smoky eggplant lasagne or a spiced lentil and mushroom stew.
