Winery Background

Rochford Wines, established in 2002 by Helmut Konecsny, is a family-owned winery located in Coldstream, Victoria, within the Yarra Valley. The winery is renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, with a strong focus on showcasing the unique characteristics of the Yarra Valley terroir.

Vineyard and Vintage Conditions

The 2023 'La Gauche' Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from three Yarra Valley vineyards: two in Gruyère and one in Coldstream. The 2023 vintage experienced a cool growing season, allowing for slow ripening and the development of concentrated flavours. The vineyard's well-drained soils and ideal microclimate impart a distinctive minerality to the wine.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-harvested between 27th March and 14th April 2023. Fruit parcels were fermented using both whole berry and crushed fruit methods. The wine underwent fermentation on skins for 14 days and was then pressed to French oak barrels (20% new) for malolactic conversion. It was aged in oak for 10 months, allowing for the integration of flavours and the development of complexity.

Tasting Notes

• Appearance: Deep, dark crimson.

• Aroma: Bright floral aromas of violets, allspice, bay leaf, blackcurrant fruits, chicory, and a touch of savoury nori roll.

• Palate: Displays red currant and cherry fruit, soft liquorice, and olive tapenade. The tannins are silky, and the wine presents pleasing freshness in this medium-bodied style.

• Finish: Long and structured, with a lingering note of dark chocolate.
