Winery Background
Rochford Wines, based in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, is a family-run winery known for crafting wines that combine elegance, regional character and approachability. Under the leadership of Helmut Konecsny, Rochford has motivated its team to focus on expressing the cool-climate finesse of the Yarra Valley through careful vineyard work, sustainable practices, and styles that are both savoury and drinkable. The Latitude label is part of that philosophy: wines that are expressive of place yet made for everyday enjoyment.
Vineyards and Vintage Conditions
The 2023 vintage enjoyed favourable conditions in the Yarra Valley: moderate daytime temperatures, cool nights, and well-draining soils. These conditions supported gradual ripening of the Pinot Noir grapes, helping them retain bright fruit flavours while preserving freshness and acid balance. Fruit was selected from well-managed parcels where canopy management and yield control ensured even exposure and flavour development.
Winemaking
Grapes were handpicked to ensure quality, then partially destemmed to retain some whole-berry character, which contributes to complexity. Fermentation took place in small vessels with gentle extraction to avoid harsh tannins. Some use of French oak provided structure, subtle spice and oak nuance without overwhelming the delicate red fruit. Malolactic fermentation was likely employed to round the profile, followed by careful maturation before bottling to preserve texture and freshness.
Tasting Notes
-
Appearance: Light to medium ruby, with a slight translucent glow.
-
Aroma: Bright cherry, raspberry, subtle violet florals, and a hint of forest floor.
-
Palate: Juicy red berry fruits (raspberry, morello cherry), gentle spice (5-spice / clove), fine earthy notes and a soft tannin texture. Reflects finesse rather than muscle.
-
Finish: Clean and lingering, with moderate acid, gentle oak influence, and an inviting subtle savoury-berry aftertaste.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with lighter meats (duck breast, pork loin), earthy mushroom dishes, soft cheeses, or even with richer seafood like salmon or trout. Great for gatherings where you want something elegant but not overpowering.
