A long and fruitful winery success owes it to the roots and strong foundation that the institution has been built upon. That is the key to the success of Grant Burge Wines. They are one of the most revered pioneers in the Australian winemaking industry.

In March 1885, John Burge, together with his wife and their two sons moved from Hillcot in Wiltshire, England to the then emerging wine region of Barossa. John worked with Hillside vineyards as one of their prized winemakers. John Burge’s knowledge, passion and love for the craft of winemaking flourished as the years went by. Now in its fifth generation of dedicated vignerons, the Burge wine heritage has reached greater heights in the good hands of John’s great great grandson, Grant.

The principles and core values of the Burge tradition have not changed through generations. The same classic techniques from more than one and a half-century ago are still used effectively along with modern winemaking. Rest assured, intense passion and expertise are applied from growing the vines, to the fermentation process, until the bottle of Grant Burge wine reaches your hands.

Grant Burge is considered to be the pioneer of crafting high quality Merlot wines in Barossa Valley. In 1982, the first Merlot vines were planted in the Hillcot Vineyard, named after his forefather’s hometown in England. Only two other varietals were available at that time until the introduction of several grape varietals in the late 20th century.  Despite the diverse range of great tasting wines in the Barossa Valley, Grant Burge Hillcot Merlot still stood out as one of the best the region has to offer.

The 2012 Grant Burge Hillcot Merlot was one of the best vintages of the varietal so far; owing to ideal winter precipitation that paved the way to a lush vine growth during the spring. This helped the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness that exemplifies the natural characters of the varietal and the rich Barossa Valley tradition.

After a series of meticulous winemaking processes, the wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of European and American puncheon barrels to intensify the distinct colour and flavours of the wine.

The 2012 Hillcot Merlot features a luxurious deep red colour. Rich raspberry, blueberry and dark chocolate build the nose of the wine while hints of spices make the aroma more intricate. Solid characters of red berries and creamy mocha dominate the palate of the wine. Undertones of dark chocolate and vanillin, together with silky smooth tannins round the exciting flavours to a sumptuous finish.

This medium-bodied wine pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine, as well as roasted lamb, and meaty pasta dishes. The 2012 Hillcot Merlot can be cellared up to 8 years but is also ready to be enjoyed while still young and fresh.
