Teunser Wines was founded by Kym Teunser and Mick Page in the year 2001. Their love for beer was a major factor in this decision. It all started when Mick and Kym were having beer at a pub. They overheard some grape – growers at the pub discussing whether to uproot their 85 – year old Grenache vines or not. They went over to these growers and offered them 4 times the amount that they were being paid by big companies to keep the vines. They bought the land, took care of the grapes and set up Teunser Wines with the goal of crafting elegant and superior – quality wines.
Over the years, the number of employees as well as the varieties of wines has increased at a good pace but Kym and Mick remain humble as ever. They like to treat their growers as friends and not just fruit suppliers. They even invite them to the winery to have a glass of beer or taste the wines that have been produced using the old vine fruit that is being grown by their families for generations now. The growers are hard – working and passionate about their craft and so they are paid handsome salaries as well. According to Mick and Kym, hiring these people has been the best decision for the winery as they have been growing grape vines for so many years on the same piece of land that they could have found no one better to do the job. This approach has led them to yield some of the best grapes from the old Barossa vineyards of the country.
Kym Teunser believes that human presence is always required on the job as no machine can compare to the experience of a human being in figuring out what is working out for the business and what isn’t. At one time, only a small picking bin is taken to be crushed which accounts for long working hours at the peak of the vintage season. Close check and careful attention is paid to all the processes being carried out so that only the finest of wines can be produced by the winery. Only a small quantity of oak is added so that the colourful flavours of old Barossa Valley vineyards are the main focus in the wines.
Even as one steps into the Teunser Wines winery, the love and passion of the winemaking team for the craft can be felt in the air. They derive enormous pleasure from their work and their sole purpose is for people to feel the same pleasure while buying and drinking their wines as they do while creating these marvellous delights.
