Types of Wine Glass for Different Wines
September 10, 2018
Going out to buy wine glasses? Stepping into the market, you’d come across beautiful and elegant glasses with or maybe without a stem, or glasses with large bowls to very thin and delicate ones. Apart from the beauty of these glasses, it needs a bit of science to find the perfect one for your wine. In this blog, we’ll be exploring the types of wine glasses and their wine pair.
Wine Glasses for Red Wine
Large wine glass with a wider opening does complete justice to the complex and robust aromatics of red wine. It provides a greater surface area ensuring maximum contact with the air making the flavours and aromas more evident.
For heavier and full-bodied reds like Merlot and Cabernet, a taller glass is preferable. It allows the wine to travel directly to the back of mouth maximizing the flavours. While for lighter-bodied wines like Pinot Noir should be served in glasses with larger bowl size directing wine to the tip of our tongue to detect the delicate flavours.
Wine Glasses for White Wine
Typically they are served in a type of wine glass with U shape and comparatively smaller bowl size. This structure helps preserve floral aromas whilst maintaining the cool temperature. Glasses with a slightly large opening are used for younger white wines directing it to the sides of our tongue where you can relish its sweetness. Mature white wines do better in taller glasses dispensing the bolder flavour to be detected at the back and sides of our tongue.
Wine Glasses for Sparkling Wine
The thing which makes a wine sparkle or creates those bubbles is the carbon dioxide. Thus, the glass should be such that it does not allow the gas to escape. A more upright and narrow type of wine glass is perfect for bubblies as it arrests those beautiful flavours and the fizz in your beverage.
Tasting a wine is like an art and if done in the right way, it can create unforgettable experiences. With this, finding the perfect food pairing is as important to enhance your wine journey. For this, you can refer to our blogs on food and wine pairings.
