Chardonnay

Riesling

Riesling brings a lighter, more aromatic style to the Barossa Valley, with bright acidity, citrus and floral notes. It's grown in smaller volumes than Chardonnay here, but the region's warmer sites give it a fuller character than Riesling from the neighbouring Clare Valley.

Other Varieties

Semillon and small amounts of Grenache Blanc round out the region's white wine range. Both varieties are made in smaller quantities, with softer acidity and riper fruit than you'd find further south, and they're worth trying if you want to see a different side of Barossa Valley white wine.

Barossa Valley White Wine

The Barossa Valley sits about an hour north of Adelaide and is best known for its full-bodied red wine, particularly Shiraz. Less well known is that the same warm days and old vines also suit white wine, with several varieties now well established across the region.

Chardonnay is the variety most closely tied to Barossa white wine today. Barossa Valley Chardonnay ranges from crisp, citrus led styles to richer, barrel fermented wines, depending on the producer and vintage.

Riesling offers a lighter, more aromatic alternative, with bright acidity and citrus character that suits food and warmer weather equally well. It's grown in smaller volumes than Chardonnay, but it's well worth seeking out.

White Wine Varieties from Barossa Valley

Chardonnay

Barossa Valley Chardonnay covers a wide stylistic range, mostly down to how much oak and malolactic fermentation a winemaker chooses to use. Leaner styles are fermented in stainless steel and built around citrus and green apple, while richer versions spend time in oak, adding texture and a rounder mouthfeel. Both styles suit seafood and lighter poultry, though the fuller versions can handle richer, creamier food too. Riesling

Barossa Valley Riesling tends to be a touch fuller and drier than the Riesling grown in the cooler Clare Valley and Eden Valley nearby, though it keeps the variety's signature acidity and citrus character. Lime, green apple and a touch of floral aromatics are common, with a long, dry finish. It pairs well with Asian style food, seafood and anything with a bit of chilli, and it tends to age well if you want to hold onto a bottle for a few years.

Other Styles

Semillon and Grenache Blanc make up a smaller but interesting part of the region's white wine range. Barossa Semillon is usually softer and rounder than its Hunter Valley counterpart, with stone fruit and a fuller texture, while Grenache Blanc offers a fresher, more textural alternative that's becoming more popular with winemakers experimenting outside the mainstream varieties. Some producers blend two or more of these together, creating styles worth trying if you want to taste something different from the region.
