How Long Does Open Wine Last?
June 15, 2026
Once you open a bottle, the clock starts ticking. As a rough guide, red wine lasts 3 to 5 days, white and rose last 5 to 7 days, sparkling lasts 1 to 3 days, and fortified wine can last for weeks. The trick is simple. Keep it sealed, keep it cool, and keep it out of the light.
Below we break down each type, show you how to make wine last longer, and explain the clear signs that a bottle has gone off.
How long open wine lasts, by type
| Wine type | Lasts once opened | Store it |
|---|---|---|
| Sparkling | 1 to 3 days | Fridge, with a sparkling stopper |
| Light white and rose | 5 to 7 days | Fridge, re-sealed |
| Full white (oaked Chardonnay) | 3 to 5 days | Fridge, re-sealed |
| Red wine | 3 to 5 days | Cool spot or fridge |
| Fortified (port, muscat) | Several weeks | Cool, dark cupboard |
These are guides, not hard rules. So trust your nose and your taste too.
Why open wine goes off
The moment wine meets air, oxygen starts to change it. At first this can soften the flavours. After a while, though, it dulls the fruit and turns the wine flat or sour.
So the real enemy is oxygen. Heat and light then speed things up. That is why storage matters so much.
Red wine once opened
Most reds stay good for 3 to 5 days. Lighter reds, like Pinot Noir, fade a little faster. Fuller reds, like Shiraz and Cabernet, often hold on a touch longer. Either way, re-seal the bottle and pop it in the fridge. You can warm the glass again before drinking.
White and rose once opened
Crisp whites and rose usually last 5 to 7 days in the fridge. Richer, oaked whites last around 3 to 5 days. Always re-seal straight away to slow the air down.
Sparkling once opened
Sparkling wine is the most fragile, because it loses bubbles quickly. With a proper sparkling stopper, it stays lively for 1 to 3 days. Without one, drink it the same day.
Fortified and dessert wine
Fortified wines, like port and muscat, last the longest. The added spirit protects them, so an open bottle can keep for several weeks. Store it in a cool, dark cupboard.
How to make open wine last longer
- Re-seal the bottle straight away. The original cork or screw cap is fine.
- Refrigerate everything, even red. Cold slows oxidation.
- Stand the bottle upright to reduce the surface touching air.
- For bottles you open often, use a vacuum pump or wine preserver.
In short, less air and less heat means more days of good drinking.
Signs your wine has gone off
Not sure if a bottle is still good? Look for these clues:
- A sharp, vinegary smell
- A flat, dull or stewed taste
- A brown or dull colour shift
- For sparkling, no bubbles at all
If you spot these, it is past its best. It will not harm you, but it will not taste good either.
A note on preservative-free wine
Preservative-free wines have no added sulphur dioxide to slow oxidation. As a result, they fade a little faster once opened, so finish them within a day or two. If that is your style, explore our preservative free wine range and simply plan to enjoy them fresh.
Frequently asked questions
1. How long does red wine last once opened?
Most red wine stays good for 3 to 5 days if you re-seal it and keep it cool. Lighter reds may fade faster.
2. Can you drink wine after a week open?
Sometimes. Whites and fortified wines often hold up. However, the flavour will usually be flatter, so check the smell and taste first.
3. Does wine go bad?
Open wine does not become unsafe quickly, but it loses flavour as it oxidises. Eventually it can taste sour, like vinegar.
4. What is the best way to store open wine?
Re-seal it, refrigerate it, and stand it upright. For frequent pours, a vacuum stopper helps a lot.
5. Should you keep red wine in the fridge after opening?
Yes. The cold slows oxidation. Just take it out 20 minutes before serving so it warms up.
The bottom line
Open wine is best enjoyed within a few days. Reds last 3 to 5 days, whites 5 to 7, sparkling 1 to 3, and fortified for weeks. Keep it sealed and cold, and you will waste far less. Ready to restock? Browse our red wine and white wine ranges.
