About Kalleske Wines
The Kalleske family has farmed at Moppa, a small sub-district of Greenock in the Barossa Valley, since 1853, making it one of the region's longer-standing family holdings. Troy and Tony Kalleske, seventh-generation family members, established Kalleske Wines as a winemaking label in 2002, working estate vineyards that include vines planted well over a century ago. Rather than buying in fruit, Kalleske makes its wine entirely from grapes grown on its own Greenock property, giving the range a consistent estate character across vintages.
Kalleske Organic & Biodynamic Wines
Kalleske's vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, farmed without synthetic chemicals and managed using compost, cover crops and biodynamic preparations to build soil health across the estate. It's a demanding way to farm the Barossa's warm, dry climate, and one relatively few producers commit to at this scale. The aim is healthier vines and more consistent fruit quality, rather than any specific taste or health claim the wine still needs to stand on its own. For more on what the certifications actually mean, see our guide to organic vs biodynamic wine.
Kalleske and the Barossa Valley
Kalleske's vineyards sit at Greenock, in the Barossa Valley's north-western corner, an area known for old vines and warm, reliable ripening. It's prime Barossa Valley Shiraz country, and Kalleske's estate includes blocks planted well before organic farming was common practice in the region. Being based in South Australia's most established fine wine region gives the fruit real depth and structure you can browse the wider range of South Australian wines at Just Wines too.
Explore Kalleske Wines
The current range covers three of Kalleske's core varieties.
Kalleske Shiraz
Shiraz is the backbone of the Kalleske range, with two distinct expressions currently available. Kalleske Moppa Shiraz is the more approachable, everyday style, while Kalleske Greenock Shiraz is the more concentrated, structured expression from the estate's Greenock fruit. Both are certified organic Barossa Shiraz, showing the dark fruit, spice and firm tannin the region is known for. For more from the style, browse our wider range of Australian Shiraz.
Kalleske Grenache & GSM
Kalleske Clarry's GSM blends Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro into a lighter, more approachable red than the estate's Shiraz bright fruit with the same organic, estate-grown character. It's a good entry point into the range, and worth comparing against our broader Grenache collection.
Kalleske Cabernet Sauvignon
Kalleske Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-vineyard varietal wine, offering firmer structure and blackcurrant character alongside the estate's Shiraz-led range. It's worth comparing against the wider Cabernet Sauvignon category.
Kalleske Moppa vs Greenock Shiraz
Moppa and Greenock are both single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz from Kalleske's own estate, but they show different sides of the property. Moppa is the more everyday release approachable, fruit-forward and ready to drink sooner while Greenock carries more concentration and structure, reflecting fruit from a specific block within the estate. If you're deciding between the two, Moppa suits regular drinking and casual pairing, while Greenock is worth setting aside for a special occasion or short-term cellaring. Both are certified organic and made from 100% estate-grown fruit.
What Are Kalleske Wines Known For?
Kalleske is known for combining serious Barossa Shiraz with genuine organic and biodynamic credentials, all from a single family-owned estate at Greenock. Seven generations of the same family farming the same ground, entirely estate-grown fruit, and a Shiraz-led range across Moppa and Greenock define the label, alongside Clarry's GSM and the Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon rounding out the current range.
