Jacob’s Creek: A Story of People, Place and Passion

Named after the Creek running through the Barossa Ranges in South Australia, Jacob's Creek wine estate showcases a vibrant and long winemaking history of Gramp & Sons wine business. This Bavarian immigrant family missed the taste of the wines of their homeland so much that they decided to plant their own grapes. The history of Jacob’s Creek dates back to 1847, when Johann Gramp planted his first vineyard on a 30 hectare plot of land. This property was situated along the banks of Jacob’s Creek and the vineyard planted was Barossa’s first commercial vineyard.

Subsequently, Johann established a small winery and underground cellar for producing his first vintage of wine around 1850. It was in 1837, when Johann’s son- Gustav moved the winery to its present day location at Rowland Flat, just 2kms from the original vineyard site. Under the leadership of Johann’s great grandson- Colin Gramp, the company started using modern winemaking technique and technologies for crafting new varieties of Australian white table wines in the year 1953.

With the introduction of new winemaking techniques, Colin also found a new plot on Barossa Ranges for the plantation of their Riesling vines. This in turn led to the production of the legendary Steingarten Wines. The winery celebrated its 100 years of winemaking in 1947, by planting a commemorative Mulberry tree. It also replanted new Riesling vines on their original vineyard site marking the celebration of their 150^th anniversary.

Jacob’s Creek: The wine brand

The Jacob’s Creek wine brand was born in 1973, when the company officially released a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec grapes. The brand marked its presence in the global wine industry in 1984, when it was exported to UK for the first time. Renowned for its award winning Sparkling wine, the company released its first Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir in 1998. The wine brand is currently owned and produced by Orlando Wines. The winery today produces some of Australia’s premium wine varieties, along with its award winning Reserve Range and Cool Harvest wine series.

Awards

The Jacob’s Creek wine brand received Maurice O’Shea Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian Wine Industry in 1994. It was for the first time ever that the award was presented to a wine brand rather than to an individual. The winery was also ranked number one among the World’s 100 Best Wineries in 2008 by the World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists.
