Mudgee Wine Region - One of the Oldest in Eastern Australia

Mudgee (meaning ‘Nest in the Hills’ in Aboriginal language) is one of the oldest viticulturist establishment in eastern Australia. Lying in the Central Ranges zone of New South Wales, Mudgee wine region is just a 4hr drive away from Sydney that leads you to lush sceneries, amazing wines, rich food and cultural experiences. At present, it houses numerous small and big wineries and around 35 cellar doors. It also hosts the famous ‘Mudgee Festival of Wine & Food Parramatta’ every year in October, that features some of its premium wineries and leading restaurants in Parramatta.

History

Mudgee wine region saw the establishment of a viticulturist tradition in the 1850’s. Twenty years down the line, its winemaking industry expanded remarkably in scale and popularity. In 1893, the grape growing practice peaked with about 55 vineyards being planted in the region.

Terroir

A neighbour to the world-renowned Hunter Valley, Mudgee witnesses a similar warm climate during the summers and autumn. Although the grape is harvested much later than in Hunter Valley because it’s situated on a high altitude and during the winters it has cool, frosty nights with low rainfall and humidity. The dry region experiences a fair amount of sunlight throughout the year and thus, irrigation is needed on some but most important vineyard sites.

With a winemaking heritage that dates back to over 150 years, Mudgee is famous for its rich, intensely flavoured red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature varietal that is at times blended with Merlot and Shiraz as well. Said that, there are a lot of surprises for a Shiraz lover as one can choose from a range of Shiraz styles, from old to more recent, lush and clean. Montrose Black Shiraz is considered one of the finest of the region. Alongside, its white wines like Chardonnay, Riesling and Semillon are equally popular in the country.
