A part of the Central Ranges zone, Mudgee wine region has a history which dates back to 1858. The region has rich, drainy, brownish coloured volcanic soils with some sites having shale, quartz and seabed sandstone within. A home to some of the highest vineyards in Australia located at ranges of 450-1180m above sea level, the region experiences frosty cold nights, low rainfall and humidity, and mild climate. The summers and autumn days are warm.

The hero grape variety of Mudgee is Cabernet Sauvignon, which shows a tremendous depth in colour when compared to those in Hunter wine region. The complex flavours and ageing potential of a Mudgee Cabernet Sauvignon wine makes it a highlight of the region. Chardonnay, being the predominant white of the region, has also consistently been one of the best Mudgee wines.
