Wynns Black Label Shiraz
February 15, 2016

Like most notable success stories in the history of mankind, the Wynns wine brand suffered the same fate. The brand first emerged way back in the year 1891 when Scottish Pioneer John Riddoch bought a small property, planted vineyards on the estate and built the famous gabled winery. In 1951, wine merchants from Melbourne by the name of Samuel and David Wynn purchased Riddoch’s vineyard and renamed it as ‘Wynns Coonawarra Estate’.

David and Samuel studied the qualities and characteristics of the grape varieties of the region and decided to embark on a journey to make a mark on the Australian winemaking industry with elegant and rich wines from the Coonawarra region. Their vision, passion and tireless pursuit led to the creation of a label that has made Riddoch’s small winery a giant in the winemaking industry.
The Black Label range of wines has created a storm among Australian wine - lovers. These wines display magnificent fruit characters and vibrant colours, presenting distinct regional elements. The two most popular wine varietals under this label are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Both these wines have shown an excellent potential for aging and oak maturation, with the average age of the grape vines being around 30 years.
Shiraz was formerly known as ‘Hermitage’ in the Coonawarra region and is an integral part of the history of the region. The Coonawarra wine region has earned the reputation for producing age-worthy wines, most of which is owed to the Cabernet Shiraz and the Cabernet Sauvignon wine blends. But the earlier ages saw the rise of Coonawarra only because of the Shiraz variety. Today, Wynns Estate has the privilege of owning properties on multiple prime locations of the Coonawarra region, thus allowing them to produce premium - quality, sophisticated wines. Also, Wynns Estate has been producing the Shiraz varietal all throughout the 1990s and their vineyards have improved markedly over the years, aiding in the growth of juicy, ripe and fresh grapes.
The Wynns Black Label Shiraz perfectly exemplifies the cool - climate winemaking style of the region. This graceful wine showcases great fruit density as well as characteristics, appealing to the heart and mind of the drinker. The wine presents complex and intense flavours of chocolate, spices and red berries with the fruity flavours being harmoniously balanced by the concentrated tannins in the wine.
This bright and lively Shiraz has a deep purple colour, highlighted on the edges with vibrant violet hues. The bouquet gives off blissful aromas of blood plums, dark cherry and raspberry in addition to lavender and bay leaf notes. The strong and complex palate is well - structured and focused, full of juicy and rich fruit characters. The mid - palate is made up of magnolia and blood plums while the delicate and plush tannins aid in crafting a layered and seamless wine.
