About Bleasdale Vineyards

The story of Bleasdale Vineyards is one of the most remarkable in Australian wine. Frank Potts, who founded the winery in 1850, had already lived several lifetimes before he ever planted a vine. He joined the British Royal Navy at nine years old, served aboard HMS Victory Lord Nelson's flagship and sailed the world before landing in South Australia in 1836. He planted the first vines at Langhorne Creek in 1858, sold fruit to Thomas Hardy in the early years, and steadily expanded the vineyards through the 1860s.

What Frank Potts built still stands. The winery has been in continuous family hands ever since, and today his descendants Michael and Ben Potts handle winemaking alongside Paul Hotker. Walking through the property, you can see the 130-year-old hand-hewn red gum vats still in use in the oldest part of the winery and the iconic Red Gum Press built in 1892. The cellar door at 1640 Langhorne Creek Road sits roughly 50 minutes south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

In 2024, Bleasdale was named the James Halliday Winery of the Year one of the highest honours in Australian wine and a recognition that, after 175 years, the wines have never been better.

Langhorne Creek Wine Region

Langhorne Creek sits on the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the flood plains of the Bremer River. The region has a warm Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling winds off Lake Alexandrina, which keeps the nights cool and extends the growing season. The soils are deep alluvial loam and sandy clay naturally irrigated by the winter flooding of the Bremer River, the same flooding pattern Frank Potts understood when he chose the site in the mid-1800s.

This combination of warm days, cool nights and fertile, moisture-retaining soils produces red wines of exceptional depth and colour. Malbec, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in Langhorne Creek, developing rich dark fruit and natural structure without the aggressive tannins you sometimes see from warmer regions. Bleasdale has grown Malbec in Langhorne Creek for longer than almost anyone else in the country, and the results show.

The Bleasdale Wines Range

Heritage Range

The Heritage range is Bleasdale's entry point and delivers remarkable quality for the price. The Second Innings Malbec is one of the best value Malbec wines in Australia dark berry, plum and chocolate with a supple, medium-bodied structure that works as well on a Tuesday night as it does at a dinner party. The Mulberry Tree Cabernet Sauvignon is an approachable, deeply flavoured Cab from estate fruit, and the Bremerview Shiraz brings classic Langhorne Creek character -- dark fruit, warm spice, and a soft, generous palate.

Flagship Range

The Flagship range represents Bleasdale at its most ambitious. Frank Potts Cabernet Blend is named for the founder and is a serious, structured wine built from estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot. The Generations Shiraz and Generations Malbec are small-production wines from the oldest vines on the estate, made only in outstanding vintages. These wines cellar well and improve over 8 to 12 years.

Sparkling and Fortified

Bleasdale's Sparkling Shiraz NV is one of the category's most consistent expressions -- deep ruby, rich dark berry, and the lively mousse that defines great Australian Sparkling Shiraz. It works well as an aperitif or alongside a cheese board. The Blanc de Blanc offers an elegant, citrus-driven sparkling white, and the Wild Fig SGM (Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvdere) brings richness and a savoury edge in a dry fortified style.

Bleasdale Malbec Why It Matters

Malbec is not a grape most people associate with Australia, but Bleasdale has been making it in Langhorne Creek for decades. The cool nights and deep alluvial soils of the region produce a distinctly Australian style -- darker and more structured than the plush, high-alcohol Malbec of Mendoza, but with the same deep colour and spice-driven generosity that makes the variety so appealing.

The Second Innings Malbec is the accessible entry point. The Generations Malbec, made from older vines, is a more serious wine worth cellaring. If you have only tried Argentinian Malbec, the Bleasdale versions are worth exploring to see what a completely different climate and philosophy does with the same grape.
