Cognac

Cognac is brandy made in the Cognac region of France under strict rules on grape variety, distillation and ageing. Armagnac

Armagnac is the largest part of this collection at 69 bottles, and it is worth trying if you have only ever had cognac. It comes from Gascony in south west France, is usually made by smaller, single estate producers, and tends toward a more rustic, characterful style than cognac's smoother blends. Castarede and Darroze are the standout names here, with Darroze's Blanche d'Armagnac ($124 to $132.45) a solid, affordable way to start.

Calvados

Calvados is apple brandy from Normandy rather than a grape spirit, and it is a genuinely different drinking experience to cognac or armagnac. How to Choose the Right Brandy

If You Are New to Brandy

If You Want a Gift or Collector's Bottle

If You Already Know Cognac or Armagnac
