What is Hunter Valley wine known for?

Semillon is the Hunter's signature white. It's picked early, so it's light and low in alcohol, with lemon, lime and grass when young. Unlike most whites, it gets better with age. After five to ten years in bottle it develops honey, lemon curd and toast, without ever seeing oak.

Hunter Shiraz is the region's classic red. It's medium bodied rather than big, with red fruit, earth and a savoury, leathery edge as it ages. Older Hunter reds were often called "Hunter burgundy" for that reason. Chardonnay and Verdelho are popular too, and the region was one of the first in Australia to grow Chardonnay.

Why Hunter Valley wine tastes the way it does

The Hunter is warm and humid, with a mean January temperature of about 23°C. That sounds too hot for fine wine, but afternoon cloud cover and sea breezes cool things down. Summer rain is common, so growers often pick early. That's why Hunter Semillon is so light and why the Shiraz is medium bodied rather than jammy.

Soils matter too. Semillon does best on the sandy, alluvial flats near the creeks, while Shiraz prefers the red clay and loam soils on the slopes.

The Hunter's subregions

The best-known area is Pokolbin, home to many of the famous wineries. Broke Fordwich, to the west, is quieter and known for Semillon. The Upper Hunter Valley, further north and inland, is warmer and drier.

Hunter vs Barossa Shiraz

Barossa Shiraz is big, ripe and full bodied. Hunter Shiraz is lighter, more savoury and more earthy, and it ages in a different way. If you find Barossa reds too heavy, a Hunter Shiraz could be just right. If you want power, try our Barossa Valley Shiraz range.

How to choose a Hunter Valley wine

  • For seafood, oysters or a summer lunch, a young Semillon is perfect.
  • For roast chicken or pork, try an aged Semillon or a Chardonnay.
  • For lamb, beef or mushrooms, a Hunter Shiraz is the classic match.
  • For a gift, an aged Semillon or a Brokenwood Shiraz always impresses.
  • For the cellar, both Semillon and Shiraz can improve for 10 to 20 years.

The Hunter's signature white is semillon: picked early, low in alcohol and able to age for decades. Shop our Hunter Valley Semillon, or browse Hunter Valley Shiraz for the region's medium-bodied reds.

FAQS

1. What wine is the Hunter Valley known for? +

The Hunter Valley is best known for Semillon and Shiraz. It also makes good Chardonnay and Verdelho. Hunter Semillon is famous for ageing for years without oak.

2. Where is the Hunter Valley and how far is it from Sydney? +

The Hunter Valley is in New South Wales, north-west of Newcastle. The main wine area around Pokolbin is about a two-hour drive north of Sydney.

3. Why does Hunter Valley Semillon age so well? +

Hunter Semillon is picked early, so it has high natural acidity and low alcohol. That acidity preserves the wine, and over five to ten years it develops honey, lemon curd and toast flavours, even though it's made without oak.
