About Jim Barry: Clare Valley's Pioneer Family Winery
Jim Barry's story in the Clare Valley begins with a qualification. In 1947, Jim Barry graduated from the Roseworthy Agricultural College - at the time Australia's premier winemaking institution with the 17th Degree in Oenology. He was the first formally qualified winemaker ever to work in the Clare Valley. Before Jim arrived, Clare Valley wine was made without formal oenological training. He changed that permanently.
Jim worked for more than two decades as the head winemaker at the Clarevale Co-operative, contributing enormously to the quality and reputation of the region's wines. He then established Taylors Wines in 1969 for the Taylor family, before founding Jim Barry Wines in his own name in the Clare Valley a winery that would bear his name and carry his philosophy forward across three generations.
Jim Barry Wines is still 100% family-owned. Peter Barry - Jim's son - took over as managing
director in 1985 and, in the same year, oversaw the first release of The Armagh Shiraz, the wine that would come to define the estate's peak ambition. Today, Peter's son Tom Barry is the winemaker, joined by siblings Sam (commercial manager) and Olivia (brand ambassador). Jim, Peter, and Tom Barry are all graduates of Roseworthy - three consecutive generations of the same family earning Australia's most prestigious winemaking qualification. It is a record no other Australian wine family can match.
Jim Barry Wines is also a member of Australia's First Families of Wine - a group of eleven multigenerational family wine producers selected for their contribution to Australian wine culture, quality, and history.
The Jim Barry Wine Range
The Armagh Shiraz - This is Jim Barry's most celebrated wine and one of Australia's most
collectable. The Armagh takes its name from the Armagh area of the Clare Valley, where Jim Barry himself planted the vineyard. First released in 1985 under Peter Barry's direction, The Armagh is a wine of extraordinary depth and longevity - dark fruit, pepper, earth, iron, and the unmistakable Clare Valley minerality that sets it apart from Barossa Shiraz. James Halliday has consistently rated The Armagh at 97-99 points, and it is considered one of the benchmark expressions of Australian Shiraz.
Lodge Hill Riesling - Jim Barry's most popular wine and one of the Clare Valley's most iconic Rieslings. The Lodge Hill Vineyard was planted in 1975 and the Riesling it produces is a textbook example of the Clare Valley style: vivid citrus aromas of lime and lemon blossom, a bone-dry palate of considerable length, and fine acidity that allows the wine to develop beautifully over five to ten years. Lodge Hill Riesling is the wine that converted thousands of Australian wine drinkers to dry Riesling, and it remains exceptional value for the quality.
The McRae Wood Shiraz - Jim Barry's second tier Shiraz and a wine of considerable quality in its own right. Named after the McRae Wood Vineyard, it is a richer, more opulent style than The Armagh while still expressing the genuine Clare Valley character: concentrated dark fruit, chocolate, pepper, and fine oak integration. It is more approachable in its youth than The Armagh and an excellent entry point into premium Clare Valley Shiraz.
The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon - Named after the classic cricket shot - a nod to the Barry family's passion for cricket - the Cover Drive is Jim Barry's flagship Cabernet. It draws on fruit from multiple Clare Valley vineyards and delivers blackcurrant, cedar, mint, and ripe tannins in a wine that is both approachable and structured. It is a consistent performer at competitions and one of the best-value Clare Valley Cabernets available.
Lodge Hill and Watervale Rieslings - Beyond the flagship Lodge Hill, Jim Barry also produces a Watervale Riesling from the Watervale subregion of Clare Valley. Watervale Riesling tends to be slightly fuller and more floral than Lodge Hill, with stone fruit and white flower aromatics alongside the citrus spine. Both represent excellent dry Riesling from one of Australia's finest Riesling regions.
