Mitchelton Wines: A Winery Built on a Bold Vision
The Mitchelton story begins well before the first vines were planted. The land takes its name
from Major Thomas Mitchell, the explorer who crossed the Goulburn River here in 1836 on his 900-kilometre journey from Sydney to Melbourne. The area was earmarked to become the town of Mitchellstown that plan never came to pass, but the name endured.
In the 1960s, Ross Shelmerdine enlisted Colin Preece one of Victoria's most respected
winemakers to identify the best site for premium viticulture in Central Victoria. Preece chose Nagambie: a warm inland climate, moderated by the river, its surrounding lakes and billabongs. The first sod was turned in 1969, and Mitchelton has been crafting exceptional wines from this place ever since.
The Tower, the Architecture, the Estate
When Mitchelton opened in 1974, its 55-metre observation tower initially designed by the
celebrated architect Robin Boyd CBE and completed by Ted Ashton after Boyd's death in 1971 became one of the most recognisable landmarks in Australian wine. Today the estate
includes a luxury boutique hotel, Day Spa, Muse Restaurant, Provedore Cafe, Art Gallery, and Cellar Door, all designed to connect visitors with the landscape and the wines it produces. The Ryan family, who purchased Mitchelton in 2011, have continued to invest in the estate, opening a 54-room hotel in 2018.
The Wines
Mitchelton specialises in Shiraz, Riesling, and Rhone-blend wines varieties that thrive in the
warm Goulburn Valley climate and the distinct alluvial soils of the Nagambie estate. Grapes are also sourced from the Toolleen estate vineyard in Heathcote, where Shiraz is grown on the north-facing slopes of Mount Camel on ancient Cambrian soils.
The Print range is Mitchelton's premium tier, showcasing the best of each vintage. The Estate range captures the signature character of the Nagambie terroir, while the Preece range named in honour of Colin Preece, the winemaker who identified this site offers outstanding quality at an accessible price point.

Mitchelton's main estate vineyard is on the banks of the Goulburn River at Nagambie in Central Victoria, within the Nagambie Lakes wine region. Mitchelton's wines reflect the warmer inland climate of the Goulburn Valley, specialising in Shiraz, Riesling, and Rhone-style blends. Both are excellent Victorian wine regions with very different styles.
