Tarrawarra Estate Wines: A Name Rooted in Country

"TarraWarra" is a Woiwurrung word from the language of the Wurundjeri people of the Kuln
Nation, translating approximately as "slow moving water" a reference to a bend in the nearby Birrarung (Yarra River) that flows south of the estate grounds. TarraWarra Estate acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the original custodians of the land and waters on which the property stands.

The Besen Family Vision

Marc and Eva Besen purchased the 400-hectare property in 1979. Encouraged by legendary Yarra Valley winemaker Dr John Middleton, they planted the first 6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1983 choosing the two varieties best suited to the Yarra Valley's cool climate and expressive soils. The decision to plant reflected a deeper vision: Marc Besen, who arrived in Australia in 1947, built TarraWarra as an act of gratitude to the country that had welcomed him. The estate was always meant to be a place of beauty, shared openly.

Forty-three years on, TarraWarra encompasses 23.9 hectares of vines alongside an extensive nature reserve, cattle grazing, a kitchen garden, a subterranean cellar door, and a one-hat restaurant led by Head Chef Daniel Snooks whose menu is driven by the kitchen garden and local Yarra Valley producers. The Besen family also established the TarraWarra Museum of Art, an intimate gallery of modern and contemporary Australian art located on the same property.

The Wines

TarraWarra Estate wines are made by Sarah Fagan, who brings more than two decades of
Yarra Valley winemaking experience to every vintage. Her 20-year tenure at De Bortoli (Yarra Valley) was followed by formative vintages at Littorai Wines in Sonoma, Weingut Leitz in the Rheingau, and GD Vajra in Barolo a global journey in cool-climate and site-specific winemaking that informs her thoughtful, precise approach at TarraWarra.

The estate range is built around Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with Single Vineyard wines
expressing the distinctive character of specific blocks within the estate. A Yarra Valley wines
Rosé rounds out the collection. All wines are made with a focus on balance, finesse, and the expression of place the principles that have defined TarraWarra since the very first vintage.
