Coonawarra's Terra Rossa Terroir

Coonawarra's secret is its soil. A narrow band of red loam resting on a limestone base, terra rossa gives Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon its unmistakable character: deep blackcurrant and cedar, fine tannin structure, and the capacity to age gracefully for decades. This distinctive strip of earth, now recognised as its own Geographical Indication, runs just 15 kilometres long and under two kilometres wide. It is arguably the most important strip of wine-growing land in Australia.

The Wynns Range Available at Just Wines

The Wynns range spans every price point, from everyday drinking to Australia's most collectible reds.

John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon - Classified Langton's Exceptional: the estate's flagship. Produced only in outstanding vintages from the oldest, most concentrated blocks. Named in honour of the man who first planted these soils.

Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon - Classified Langton's Distinguished. The wine that built the Wynns name. Consistently one of Australia's best value premium Cabernets, released annually and built to cellar for 10 to 20 years.

Michael Shiraz - Classified Langton's Excellent. Named after winemaker Michael Polin who produced the first vintage in 1952. Rich, concentrated, and distinctly Coonawarra in style.

V&A Lane Shiraz Cabernet - Named after a lane on the estate. A generous, accessible red blending the two varieties Coonawarra grows best.

Chardonnay and Riesling - Estate whites that show the cooler character of southern Coonawarra. Precise and food-friendly.

FAQS

1. Who owns Wynns Coonawarra Estate? +

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is owned by Treasury Wine Estates (ASX: TWE), one of the world's largest wine companies. The estate was originally founded in 1891 by John Riddoch and purchased in 1951 by David and Samuel Wynn, who renamed it from Chateau Comaum. Treasury Wine Estates acquired Wynns as part of its broader Australian premium wine portfolio.

2. What is Coonawarra famous for? +

Coonawarra is famous for its terra rossa soil and its Cabernet Sauvignon. The narrow band of red loam over limestone in the Coonawarra Geographical Indication (GI) in South Australia produces Cabernet with exceptional structure, blackcurrant depth, and longevity. Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the region's largest and most internationally recognised producer.

3. What is the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra? +

The Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is widely regarded as the benchmark Coonawarra Cabernet. Classified Langton's Exceptional, it is produced only in outstanding vintages and is one of Australia's most collectible reds. The Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, classified Langton's Distinguished, is Australia's most recognised Coonawarra Cabernet by volume and is considered one of the country's best value premium reds.

4. What does Langton's Classification mean for Wynns wines? +

Langton's Classification of Australian Wine is the country's most authoritative auction-based ranking of premium wines. Three Wynns labels appear in the current Classification: John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon (Exceptional), Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon Distinguished), and Michael Shiraz (Excellent). These classifications recognise consistent auction performance, critical acclaim, and long-term investment quality.

5. When was the first Wynns vintage? +

The first official Wynns Coonawarra Estate vintage was released in 1952, the year after David and Samuel Wynn purchased the property and renamed it from Chateau Comaum. The winery had originally been established by John Riddoch in 1891, making it one of Australia's oldest continuously operated winery sites.

6. How long can Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon age? +

Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon from strong vintages can age comfortably for 15 to 20 years, with great years showing development beyond 25 years. The combination of Coonawarra's terra rossa terroir, the Cabernet Sauvignon variety's natural tannin structure, and Wynns' traditional winemaking approach produces wines built for the cellar. The John Riddoch in exceptional vintages can develop for 30 years or more.
